They dabble in the art of being irresistible without trying too hard, of suggesting depths that reward closer inspection; in glances that last half a second too long, a bare shoulder glistening with sweat, a drip down a windowpane that simultaneously tells you to look away and take a silent peek.

This is the essence of Fig Milk: a scent inspired by the quiet lush of longing and the private pleasure of devotion.

Monica Vitti wandering through architectural landscapes, searching for missing friend but finding herself instead. The film where nothing happens except everything changes, where desire becomes geography and mystery becomes identity. It’s not just petals and pollen — it’s skin, sweat, sunlight, decay. A scent that lands somewhere between a love letter and a bruise. You lean in, and for a second, the world shuts up. No inbox, no deadline. Just your nose, your brain, and a chemistry older than language.

It’s such a small act. Stupid, even. But it does something. Grounds you. Reminds you you’re an animal. A body. A being with receptors made to catch pleasure mid-air.

There’s no productivity in it. Which is exactly the point.

FIG MILK is our most intimate oil — soft, steady, inspired by Cleopatra’s handmaidens, the quiet witnesses to private ritual and power. When I designed its packaging, I wanted it to feel devotional.

Rather than lifting from the museum archive, I created a new emblem: a fusion of two ancient symbols — the Ankh and the Djed pillar.

The Ankh, the key of life, carries breath, sensuality, the pulse of living skin. The Djed, Osiris’s backbone, is endurance itself: the spine raised after dismemberment, the pillar that held the cosmos upright. In ritual, Isis lifted the Djed to restore balance — earth renewed, Nile returned, life made whole again. Together, Ankh and Djed form a single mark: tenderness held by strength, devotion made visible.

It felt right for FIG MILK. A scent of fig, coconut, and green violet leaf — clinging like sun-warmed linen. On skin, oil becomes milk, and the sensation is steadying, private, like being held.

Placing this emblem on the box was a way of honouring those who serve in shadows — the handmaidens, the attendants, the loyal witnesses who carried memory and desire without stepping into light. FIG MILK is for the quiet figures who preserve ceremony — the ones who embody resilience as much as softness.

Every 39BC box is a fragment of history you can hold. With FIG MILK, the symbol is both artefact and offering: life entwined with endurance, devotion that lingers like scent on skin.

Charmion — Cleopatra’s attendant and confidante — writes to a friend from the garden shadows where queens never walk. The letter, preserved in fragments of imagination rather than record, carries the voice of one who lived in proximity to power yet remained unseen.

She writes of loyalty tested by longing. Cleopatra, magnificent still, moves through marble corridors with divine composure, receiving Roman dispatches as though they were offerings at temple altars. Yet in private, Charmion notes, the queen lingers at west-facing windows, staring toward Rome — the city that holds the man who could make her forget she was goddess: Mark Antony.

Antony is absent again, gone for months. Cleopatra’s children carry his restless energy in their small frames. When they ask after their father, she answers with myths: Dionysus wandering distant lands, gods who love mortals but cannot remain. In the silence between stories, Charmion perceives grief — a yearning raw enough to strip away the queen’s mask of divinity.

The handmaiden observes this dual life with precision. She dresses Cleopatra for senate meetings where Antony’s name threads through treaties. She prepares her for festivals celebrating victories won with other women’s wealth. She scents her queen’s skin with oils for evenings spent among ambassadors, while Antony lies in other beds across the empire.

Charmion captures the paradox with a single metaphor: Cleopatra loves Antony as the drowning love air — desperately, completely. He loves her as storms love coastlines — dramatically, destructively, leaving beauty and wreckage entwined.

Through it all, Charmion remains at her queen’s side. She braids jasmine into Cleopatra’s hair, arranges golden clasps, and prepares her baths. Sometimes, their eyes meet in the mirror. In those moments, Charmion sees not Isis incarnate, not sovereign of Egypt, but a woman who chose to love a man who could never choose her above all else.

This is the intimacy of service — knowing both the goddess and the woman, both the sovereign and the vulnerable. It is loyalty that persists even when survival offers reason to flee.

At 39BC, this spirit is honored in ritual. Fig Milk, part of Vol. I: Alexandria, evokes the quiet intimacy of a handmaiden’s perspective. Green fig, violet leaf, coconut, and cedarwood create a fragrance close to the skin — tender, restrained, and lingering like memory.

Because some loyalties run deeper than survival. Some devotions are more essential than happiness. And some stories endure only in whispers and in scent.
