When I was building 39BC, one name kept resurfacing: Leonard Koren. Buried in research on ancient baths or ritual oils, and suddenly there he was again — an American architect who turned bathing into a counterculture.

I first stumbled across him when writer Isobel Van Dyke mentioned WET: The Magazine of Gourmet Bathing, the cult publication he launched in Venice, California in 1976. Thirty-four issues before it folded in '81, and its legacy is still outrageous. Even the tagline made me stop — gourmet bathing. Who else, in the middle of post-war minimalism, dared to make bathing sound decadent, erotic, and absurd all at once?

WET was a pulp-poetic collage: design experiments, essays on Japanese monks, articles comparing the flush power of toilets, erotic photo spreads, parody ads. Irreverent, sensual, knowingly ridiculous. Reading back issues now feels like eavesdropping on a late-night party between philosophers, hedonists, and designers who'd all had a little too much wine. It made the bath feel radical again.

Fifteen years later, Koren published his strange, meditative little book: Undesigning the Bath (1996, reissued in 2025). On the surface, an essay on architecture. In reality, a manifesto. His thesis is brutal: the more you design a bath, the less alive it feels. Polished marble, symmetry, efficiency — all of it deadens the experience. True bathing belongs to instinct, not instruction. Water should be elemental, not engineered.

He celebrated imperfection. Lo-tech mud baths. Hillside onsens. Hammam courtyards. Steam rising from cracks in the earth. Sunlight falling through leaves onto stone.

Reading it felt like permission. Permission to think about bathing as culture. To design 39BC as a theatre of scent, skin, and memory — not merely a brand of glossy products, but a ritual older than architecture.

Even now, somewhere in the background, Koren is still whispering: slow down. Undress your mind. Don't overdesign it. Let the water teach you something.

What is it about roses that makes even the most restrained people lose their heads? Perhaps it’s the unabashed theatre of them: a flower that arrives dressed in velvet, oozing scent, and carrying the faintest whiff of danger. Roses are not content to sit meekly in a vase; they demand stage-light, poems, promises, and pacts sealed in perfume.

Ancient cultivators realised they could breed desire into petals, could concentrate longing into something you could crush between your fingers. And for over 5,000 years, roses have been humanity's most dangerous floral obsession — beauty that requires thorns for Roman bathers who mixed pleasure with pain and Persian poets who knew that the most compelling love stories need the tang of hurt.

\n In the Roman Empire, Rosalia was a festival of roses celebrated primarily in May.\n

The red rose carries particular weight: love with consequences, devotion that demands sacrifice, scars worth keeping. In temple gardens, priestesses offered rose petals to gods and girls crushed petals into rudimentary perfumes to attract their first lover.

This isn't the innocent pink of first infatuation or the virginal white of wedding bouquets. Red roses understand that true passion requires blood — metaphorical or otherwise. They've witnessed empires fall for want of the wrong lover, queens choose death over dishonour, poets destroy themselves trying to bottle what can only be experienced.

Roman matrons scattered rose petals in their marriage beds not for romance but for power — understanding that pleasure properly deployed could reshape inheritance laws and succession plans.

In SAGE WATER, red rose threads through mineral clarity and green sharpness like silk ribbon through steel armour. It doesn't dominate the composition but haunts it, adding warmth, devotion, danger and longing.

This wasn't luxury disguised as necessity. This was ritual hygiene — the daily practice that kept skin supple and senses alert for someone whose survival depended on reading unspoken signals, whose value lay in anticipating rather than reacting.

After cleansing comes the anointing. Light oils — moringa, almond, castor — recorded in medical papyri as essentials for palace life in desert climate. For Charmion, these might be scented with fig leaf or wild herbs gathered from palace gardens, subtle enough to perfume skin without claiming airspace that belonged to her queen.

The courtesy of someone who understood her place: never overwhelming the room with personal scent, never competing with the jasmine and frankincense that announced Cleopatra's presence. Her fragrance had to complement, not contradict, the royal performance.

The solitary preparation that kept her body soft, mind alert, spirit ready for whatever demands the day might bring. The ritual that prepared her not just for service, but for the ultimate loyalty she would demonstrate in that sealed mausoleum: dying beside the queen she'd spent her life serving.

Egypt understood this long before science. We return to that philosophy: water to awaken, oil to protect, scent to remain.
